A Fan's Guide to "Doing Dickens"
My family has been to every Dickens Festival at Stadium. It
has become a tradition with us. We try to arrive for breakfast. There are
several very good places to eat in the Stadium District. Then we hit the
streets. We try to catch the free carriage ride before the big crowds arrive.
Then we go to Rankos. My daughter and I love to look at the vintage toys. She
usually gets her Dad’s present there, something he would remember from his
childhood. I have her take him out of the store so he won’t see his gift and
then do the shopping for her Christmas stocking. After we have seen a couple of
the shows, we head over to the Healing Garden Tearoom. My husband says it is
time for the “girly lunch” but he loves it too. They have a great Christmas
tea. It makes us feel like we are in Victorian England. We catch a couple more
of the shows, do some more shopping and watch the street performers. We like to
dress up for the day or at least wear hats so we feel part of the festivities.
It is a great day.
One of my favorite holiday memories happened at the 2nd
Dickens. My daughter was very young and as we got out of the car Santa rounded
the corner. He made time to talk with my daughter and give her a candy cane.
When he left she tugged on my jacket and said, “Now that was the REAL Santa.”
We can’t wait to join the fun this year.
We invite you to share your Dickens Festival at Stadium memories and tips on our facebook page.
